Oat Montien’s background in museums has geared his artistic practice towards queering historical canon. With echoes of masters such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Edgar Degas, and Chakrabhand Posayakrit, Montien’s male nudes challenge, redefine, and take ownership of traditional depictions of the subject. His drawings and paintings interrogate the intimacy between the artist and his models, with a strong emphasis on their gender identities. His nude drawing classes (2016) can be perceived as performative installation installations, as well as discourse against the academic approach of the male physique.
